College of Science - Undergraduate Program in Interdisciplinary Science
About US
Introduction

As part of the efforts for establishing the “college” as the core of teaching instead of the departments, we formed “the Undergraduate Program in Interdisciplinary Science” in 2017. The program, directly operated by the College of Science, is an independent unit which has the same status as the departments in administration. A bachelor degree of science will be offered to the students who complete the program.

The features of new science and technology all have the character of interdisciplinary field, this motivates us to form the program to focus on the interdisciplinary trainings. Thus, the program shares the faculty members, the courses, and the resources with the departments belonging to the College of Science, namely, Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Psychology, and Department of Bioscience Technology. Under such foundation, the program pushes one step further by offering the new interdisciplinary courses required by the new industry.

Currently, there are two main modules in the courses offered by the program, “Big Data Science” and “Green photoelectric Science”. When students are accepted by the program, they have to choose one module of courses to complete at the same time. The minimum required credit hours for graduation is 128, and the diploma of the bachelor of science will be given after students finish 128 academic credits and pass graduation threshold.

We sketch the formation structure for two modules of courses in the program as follows:

Mission

Our mission:
To honor both the university’s holistic approach towards education and its scholastic principle, as well as to meet the university’s goal, which strives to ensure that each and every student reaches their full potential given their differences in terms of talents, temperaments, skills, and backgrounds, the Undergraduate Program in Interdisciplinary Science is committed to the following objectives:

  1. Cultivate interdisciplinary talent
“Slashie” is the current trend for contemporary society. The Undergraduate Program in Interdisciplinary Science is designed to meet the trend, and it aims to cultivate the skill of interdisciplinary fields by developing personal expertise on combine multiple professions
  2. Meet the requirements from Industry-4.0
The current trend in Industry-4.0 is smart science and data-information exchange. Two modules of courses in the program, Big Data Science and Green photoelectric Science, are designed to meet the trend.
  3. Promote practical implementations
To fill the gap between academic study and industry applications, two modules of courses all contain significant part of experimental operations.
Objectives

The objectives for two modules of courses are described as follows:

(A) Big Data Science

According to the era of information explosion, the course, called the scientific statistics and lead by the College of Science, is strengthened, and the practical information inquiry courses in Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of Psychology and Department of Bioscience Technology are established.

  • Research efforts are directed towards capturing data, data storage, data analysis, search, sharing, transfer, visualization, queryin, updating, and data source.
  • Career paths
    1. Advanced studies: The students graduated from the program are pursued to search Master’s or Ph.D. degree.
    2. Job market: The demand of information management specialists has increased very rapidly. Such demand is distributed over different institutions and fields, including the government institutions, manufacturing, healthcare, education, Internet of Things, information technology, and etc.

(B) Green photoelectric Science

  • Research efforts are directed towards capturing data, data storage, data analysis, search, sharing, transfer, visualization, queryin, updating, and data source.
  • Career paths
    1. Advanced studies: The students graduated from the program are pursued to search Master’s or Ph.D. degree on material science.
    2. Job market: Students graduated from the program are easy to find jobs in photo-elctric industry, including LED, Organic LED, and etc..

Future Prospects

  • Boosting the students’ competitive edge by combining fundamental and professional trainings in the curriculum. We educate our students for the future technological and economic developments of our nation by equipping them with solid knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and advanced innovation technologies.
  • Maintaining a balance between theory and experiment in terms of curriculum design. In particular, we strengthen the mutual support between teaching and research.
  • Availing ourselves from the school’s quality digital learning system, i-Learning, when the curriculums are designed . By doing so, we can further improve the efficiency and effectiveness in teaching and learning. As students can fully access the course information and related resources, they can be benefited a lot in the study.
